CHADRON, Neb. -- February 28, 2020 -- The Chadron State College softball team opened its home softball field with two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tests against Regis University on Friday. Regis got away with the noon game 4-3, while CSC took the later game 3-1.
Regis took a 3-0 lead into the fourth in the early contest, before
Gabby Russell's three-run blast tied the game.
The Rangers' Madison Flores put her team ahead for good in the sixth with a solo shot to make it 4-3 Regis.
DeAnna Barrera, who struck out six RU batters in seven innings, took the loss to fall to 3-6 on the season, while Regis freshman Kara Rodeheaver improved to 4-3.
CSC pitcher
Tia Kohl scattered five hits and allowed just one run in the mid-afternoon clash, picking up her third win of the season in a complete game effort.
Although Regis's Kynra Nelson led off the game with a triple, later scoring on a wild pitch, Kohl settled in and retired the next 14 batters in a row.
CSC tied the game in the third with small ball tactics, walking twice and getting a sac bunt from
Bailey Marvel and a sac fly from
Bailey Rominger.
In the fourth, two more Eagles walked and
Angelica Maples doubled to load the bases for
Ellie Owens. A misplayed grounder by the Regis third baseman sent two more CSC run across the plate, and Kohl preserved a 3-1 victory.
The losing pitcher for Regis was freshman Abby Covington, who departed the game in the fifth.
Marvel led the Eagles batting 2-for-5 for the day, plus the sacrifice. Russell, Owens, and Rominger collected all the RBI.
Another doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
