KEARNEY, Neb. -- January 16, 2021 -- Despite a major upset at 174 pounds by Chadron State College, the University of Nebraska at Kearney Lopers prevailed 43-3 on Saturday afternoon in Kearney, in front of a crowd of 100 spectators.

In the 174-pound bout, newcomer Rowdy Pfeil, a true freshman from Moorcroft, Wyoming, took a 4-0 lead in his match against No. 4 Terrell Garraway with a first period takedown and two nearfall points. Garraway scored takedowns in each of the second and third periods, but two escapes gave Pfeil a 6-5 lead after a penalty point was awarded to Garraway for stalling. Pfeil sealed the win with a third period takedown.

Kearney jumped out to a 16-0 lead in team points with a major decision at 125 pounds and pins at 133 and 141.

At 149 pounds, CSC's Sebastian Robles went toe-to-toe with No. 5 Sam Turner of Kearney for two periods. Each of the wrestlers had takedowns in the first two frames, before Turner decided the match with a third-period takedown to win 5-3.

No. 9 Jacob Wasser and No. 2 Matt Malcom both recorded wins at 157 pounds and 165, respectively, and the dual was out of reach at 29-0 at that point. Pfeil's win at 174 cut it to 29-3.

Kearney won each of the last three weight classes to produce the final score.

While UNK improved to 4-3 overall, having been in season continuously for over a month, CSC is now 0-1 without being able to compete in November and December. 

The Eagles debut at home on Thursday versus Colorado Mesa University at 6 p.m. in the Chicoine Center.

CSC has also added a trip to the Midwest Duals in Kearney on January 23, where it will make up its RMAC debut against Adams State, originally scheduled for January 7.
