Pueblo wins a pair of close games Saturday

PUEBLO, Colo. – March 6, 2021 – The Chadron State College softball team lost both its first two games on Saturday by close margins in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series at Colorado State University-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves won 5-4, in nine innings, and 2-0 in regulation.
 
In the noon game, CSU-Pueblo was the first on the board, going ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
 
With two out in the top of the fourth, CSC got a four free bases on two walks, a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch, resulting in a tie game and loaded bases. Micah Stouffer then singled to center field plating two more runs, and the Eagles were up 3-1.
 
Pueblo tied things up in the sixth, with two singles and a double, aided by a passed ball.
 
After a scoreless inning and a half, Pueblo senior outfielder Sabrina Felix hit a solo homer to lead off the ninth, walking off with a 5-4 win.
 
CSC's Tia Kohl struck out six, but she fell to 0-3 on the season, pitching the complete game. CSU-Pueblo's Sophia Lishner, a freshman, improved to 2-2. The ThunderWolf pitchers walked 11 Eagles batters.
 
Later, CSC managed only three hits and a walk at the plate, as a team while Isabel Griego batted 3-for-4 for the Pack.
 
Chadron State's Peyton Propp struck out six, but walked eight, falling to 1-3 in a complete game.
 
Both of Pueblo's runs were in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by third baseman Marissa Piatt.
 
Winning pitcher Samantha Riesen earned her first decision to get to 1-0, holding CSC to three hits and striking out five in a complete game shutout.
 
CSC third baseman Sloane Quijas was the Eagles' top batter for the day going 3-for-6 with two walks.
 
Chadron State returns to the field against CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at 11 a.m., for another doubleheader.
