ALAMOSA, Colo. – April 11, 2021 – Chadron State College salvaged the weekend softball series at Adams State University on Sunday, splitting a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader games. The Eagles took a 6-5 defeat in the morning game, then came back to win 7-3 in the afternoon.
At the conclusion of game four, CSC was 8-19 overall (8-16 RMAC), while ASU finished the weekend 10-20 (10-18 RMAC), two games ahead of the Eagles in the conference standings.
In game three, the Grizzlies scored all six of their runs on three, two-run homers. Those occurred in the first, second, and fifth innings, and were issued by senior infielder Tyler Hays, freshman pitcher Tayler Duncan, and freshman second baseman Sydney Muniz, in order.
The Eagles played catchup all the way. An
Ellie Owens RBI triple made it 2-1 in the top of the second.
Bailey Marvel reached on a walk in the third, and scored, to put it at 4-2, on a one-out groundout by
Sloane Quijas. Owens' fifth-inning solo home run in the fifth closed it to 4-3, and later in the inning, Marvel crossed on a
Gabby Russell single to tie the game.
Addison Spears' sac fly in the sixth scored
Mackenzi Kroll, making it a one-run game again, however three CSC batters went down in order in the seventh to close out the Grizzlies' win.
Decisions were awarded to Jasmine Garbiso (5-5) for the Grizzlies, and Russell (1-2) for the Eagles.
Game four saw the Eagles finally able to figure out ASU pitcher Jade Garbiso, slapping out 14 hits against the Grizzlies' ace. Eight of nine CSC batters hit safely in the game, and the ninth reached on a hit-by-pitch.
CSC pitcher
Peyton Propp limited ASU to six base hits, striking out six, as she improved to 4-9 on the season.
The Eagles were on top 3-0 by the top of the third inning. Quijas and Russell connected on back-to-back at-bats in the first inning, with Russell's double getting CSC out to 1-0. The same pair added two more runs in the third, this time occurring on a Quijas RBI triple and a groundout by Russell which brought Quijas in.
Adams answered in the bottom of the inning. A walk, a Hays triple, and a Jade Garbiso homer knotted the game at three runs apiece.
CSC strung together 7 of its 14 hits, aided by a dropped fly ball, as the Eagles asserted themselves offensively to the tune of four more runs in the fourth inning.
At 7-3, Propp allowed only one hit the rest of the way, completing the seven-inning game on her own.
Jade Garbiso fell to a record of 4-6 going the distance for the Grizzlies.
Quijas was 4-for-4 at the plate in game four, and 5-for-8 on Sunday, to lead the Eagles in batting. She was a home run away from hitting for the cycle in game four.
Marvel was also 5-for-8 on the day, with a walk and a stolen base in game three.
The Eagles return home to CSC Softball Field next weekend, hosting the 3-24 Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets on Saturday and Sunday.
