CHADRON, Neb. – February 12, 2022 – The Chadron State College softball team fell to 0-4 overall on Saturday, dropping a 12-7 decision to Nebraska-Kearney in the afternoon, and suffering a 9-0 shutout to Eastern New Mexico in the evening.
In the Kearney game, the Lopers got on the board first, in the second inning, when Hailey Schaneman led off with a single and later scored on a one-out fielder's choice.
For the Eagles,
Addison Spears led off the bottom of the inning with a single of her own, before
Jessie Henchenski batted her home, on a pinch hit appearance, tying the game.
Kearney used four base hits, two walks, and a wild pitch in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. All four hits were singles and all came with two outs on the board. A double by Avery Wood, leading off in the fourth, plus a CSC error and a sac fly produced two more runs.
The Eagles offense got going finally in the bottom of the fourth. After their first two batters were retired,
Sloane Quijas singled and
Paige Propp tripled her home. Propp made it home on the next at-bat when
J'lyssa Martinez singled to left, and Henchenski homered to make it 7-5.
CSC kept in pursuit, and Kearney kept the Eagles busy. In the fifth they put across five more, extending their lead to 12-5. This time a one-run homer by Katie Gosker and a two-RBI blast by Bri Healy led off the frame. Wood scored on an RBI single and Schaneman served up a one-out sac fly, as the Lopers pounded out six more base hits.
Propp scored
Mackenzi Kroll on an RBI double in the sixth, and later crossed the plate on a defensive error, but at 12-7, that was the last time the scoreboard lit up.
UNK's Kelsey Goodban was credited with her first decision of the year, going to 1-0 on the season. CSC's
Tia Kohl fell to 0-3.
In the latter game, the Greyhounds' Brooke Leger moved to 4-0, earning her first complete game shutout of the year as she held the Eagles to .167 batting.
The Greyhounds scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third, getting a decision after four and a half innings due to the eight-run rule.
In Lubbock, the Eagles have one more contest, against Northwest Oklahoma State, at 10 a.m. MT on Sunday morning.
