Two teams get past Eagles on Saturday in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY – February 19, 2022 – The Chadron State College softball team lost two games on Saturday, falling 7-2 to Northeastern State University in Bethany, Oklahoma in the morning, and taking a 7-4 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State at Piedmont High School in the afternoon.

In their first game of the day against Northeastern State, the Eagles matched their highest single-game team batting average of the season, hitting .310 as a squad, but they also stranded the most baserunners so far this year. Nine were left on base after the team hammered out the same number of base hits, but CSC made use of a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice to score twice.

The Riverhawks were up 7-0 after two and a half innings, thanks mostly to timely home runs in their first three at-bats.

Aliyah Rothstein broke up the shutout in the bottom of the third, advancing to scoring position on a sac bunt by J'lyssa Martinez and scoring on a Sloane Quijas single.

The only other run in the game came from the Eagles' fourth inning stand, when they put their first two batters on base, but finished the inning with bases loaded. Addison Spears scored with one out, on an RBI single by Samantha Conradie. After Micah Stouffer walked to fill the bases, a lineout and a force at second ended the inning.

In the afternoon game, the Eagles led through two and a half innings, before Southeastern State exploded for six runs in the fourth.

Spears singled for two RBI after Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and Quijas singled on. Both runners stole a base to get into scoring position for the two-RBI base hit.

CSC pitcher Tia Kohl held the Storm scoreless through two and two-thirds innings, but with two out in the third, Southeastern made it 2-1.

In the fourth, however, the Storm put up six runs on five base hits, including two doubles, plus three walks, going up 7-2.

The Eagles managed to cut the margin to 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, getting two unearned runs on a two-RBI double by Martinez after a fielding error by Southeastern.

CSC is now 0-9 and has one more contest in Oklahoma, when it faces Missouri Southern at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
