CHADRON, Neb. – March 13, 2022 – Colorado Christian University completed a series sweep over the Chadron State College softball team on Sunday, winning 10-0 and 7-2 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader in Chadron.
"CCU is a very good team," said CSC Head Softball Coach
Kaley Ness. "They're not just good in our conference, but regionally and nationally they're tough. Our biggest thing was that we struggled to be consistent and execute the small things. I'm disappointed that we didn't have a better series."
CCU pitched a two-hit shutout in the morning game. The Cougars jumped ahead 5-0 in the top of the first inning, tacked on four more in the third, and plated one final run in the fourth inning to invoke the run rule after five.
Kayla Middleton gave the Cougars a boost with a three-run home run in the third inning. Samaria Roope, who pitched the last inning, also homered in the fourth to finish the scoring for CCU. Both players finished with a game-high three RBI.
J'Lyssa Martinez and
Jessie Henchenski had singles for the only base hits by the Eagles.
Alexis Hamilton earned the decision for the Cougars, improving to 7-1 with four innings in the cirle, while CSC's
Kenzi Garner fell to 2-4 pitching two and one-third.
Later, CCU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning, with a pair of doubles and an error by CSC. The Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning, tying it 2-2 with back-to-back RBI doubles by Henchenski and
Lauren Zimmerman.
From there, CSC threatened to pull ahead in the fourth, but left runners on second and third. After that the Eagles went hitless the last three innings.
Meanwhile CCU continued to add to its score with a fifth-inning run and two apiece in the sixth and seventh.
Abrie Castillo started in the circle for CCU and pitched four innings to improve to 5-2.
Tia Kohl pitched six and one-third innings for CSC, falling to 0-10.
The Cougars improved to 19-5 (9-1 RMAC), while CSC fell to 3-19 (3-9 RMAC).
CSC continues to host games on Monday at noon, when Northern State visits for a non-conference doubleheader.
