Eagles fall to #9 ranked Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Chadron State College volleyball team fell in three sets to the nations #9 ranked team, Colorado Mesa, Tuesday night in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
The Mavericks won 25-16, 25-12, and 25-15, dropping CSC's record to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. 
 
The Eagles hit a season low .041 in the match, while the Mavericks hit .363.
 
CSC was leading 15-13 in set one before the hosts manufactured a 10-0 scoring run. A service error ended the run but the Mavericks scored the final two points of the set.
 
Like set one, Chadron State led early but another Colorado Mesa scoring run ended set 2. The Eagles led 10-9 this time, but the Mavericks scored 12 of the next 13 points to gain a 22-10 lead before the set victory.
 
In set three, the score was tied at four before the Mavericks scored the next five points and never lost the lead on way to the match victory.
 
Mayson Fago, a senior from Evans, Colorado, and Kally Kirkwood, a freshman from Fleming, Colorado, had a team high five kills for CSC.
 
The Mavericks Sydney Leffler and Savannah Spitzer had a match high 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Leffler hit .448 while Spitzer hit .435.
 
Kendyl Kirkwood, a junior from Fleming, Colorado led the Eagles with 15 assists. Rylee Ward, a sophomore from La Grange, Wyoming added five.
 
Alondra Hernandez, a junior from Provo, Utah had a team high eight digs. A total of 10 different Eagles recorded a dig in the match.
 
Aiyana Fujiyama, a junior from Wahiawa, Hawaii, had a team high four blocks for CSC.
 
The Eagles return to action at home on Saturday at 4 p.m., against Westminster.
