Grizzlies defeat Eagles in five

The Adams State Grizzlies overcame a 2-1 set deficit and won sets four and five to defeat CSC Saturday in Alamosa, Colorado, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19 and 15-9. 

Chadron State falls to 12-10 overall and remains at 5-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.  

The Eagles scored four of the final five points to win set one. In set two, the Grizzlies finished the set on a 6-1 scoring run for their first set victory of the evening.  

CSC's set three victory saw them lead from start to finish. Both teams were tied at 17 in set four before the Grizzlies scored the next three points to gain the lead and eventual set victory.  

Adams State opened the fifth set with a 9-4 lead and led the entirety for the set and match victory.  

Mayson Fago, a senior from Evans, Colorado, led Chadron State with 16 kills. Lexi Hurtado, a graduate student from Aurora, Colorado and Bella Adams, a sophomore from Pueblo, Colorado, added 15 and 12 kills apiece. Adams led the Eagles with an attack percentage of .346.  

Kendyl Kirkwood, a junior from Fleming, Colorado, led Chadron State with 32 assists. Rylee Ward, a sophomore from La Grange, Wyoming had a season high 20 assists.  

Three Eagles finished with double-digit digs, led by Alondra Hernandez. Hernandez, a junior from Provo, Utah, had 23 digs while Ward had 15 and Hurtado added 12. Ward and Hurtado both finished with double-doubles for the Eagles.  

Aiyana Fujiyama, a junior from Wahiawa, Hawaii had a team high four blocks.  

As a team, Chadron State hit .144 in the loss. The Grizzlies finished with an attack percentage of .187.  

The Eagles have a short turnaround as they host Colorado Christian on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
