Colorado Mesa Wrestlers top Eagles in Dual
The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team wrapped up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's dual championship for the 2022-23 season with a perfect 7-0 record Saturday when the Mavericks won 28-16 over Chadron State in the Chicoine Center.
The Mavericks won six of the 10 matches, including three by pins.Â
The Eagles earned bonus points in two of the four victories.
Ethan Leake pinned his opponent in the middle of the first period to win the 141-pound match and improve his record to 15-5, and Rowdy Pfeil dominated his 174-pound foe 13-0 for a major decision to even his season record to 9-9.
Chadron State's other wins were much closer. Quen Campbell got a late takedown over Collin Metzgar to win the 133-pound match 4-3. Campbell is now 13-1 for the season at ranked No. 2 at 133 nationally. Metzgar also is nationally ranked.
Also, CSC heavyweight Mason Watt was a 2-1 winner when Mesa's Ruben Samuelson was assessed a penalty point for stalling in the third period. Both had previously earned a point for escaping when they were in the down position. Watt's season record is now 13-3.
The Eagles concluded their dual season with a 7-8 record. They'll continue to work out and will host the Super Region 6 Championships on Saturday, Feb. 26.Â
