Eagles end losing streak against Mavericks

CHADRON, Neb. -- March 23, 2023 -- The Chadron State College softball team swept Colorado Mesa Thursday, ending a 22-game losing streak against the Mavericks.

The wins were the first for CSC in the matchup since February 27, 2017 when Allie Mason hit a walk off homerun, giving CSC a 6-5 victory.

CSC won game one 5-1 before winning game two 5-3 Thursday, improving their record to 10-19 overall and 8-14 in the conference. The Mavericks are now 19-10 overall and 17-4 in RMAC play.

In game one, the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Rylee Crouch hit her first of two home runs on the day. Crouch leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in homeruns and RBI's this season.

A Sloane Quijas single in the bottom of the second scored Brady Laucomer and Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis, giving CSC a 2-1 lead.

Laucomer, a freshman from Scottsbluff, finished the doubleheader batting .800 to lead the Eagles.

In the bottom of the third, Kenzi Garner skied a ball to center field. The Maverick outfielder ran to catch the ball but it bounced out of her glove and over the fence, giving Garner a solo homerun.

CSC continued adding to their lead after a Lauren Zimmerman single scored Quijas. Garner followed her homerun with a sacrifice fly, scoring Aliyah Rothstein and giving CSC the 5-1 lead and victory.

Garner and Quijas led CSC with two RBI's each in the victory. Zimmerman added the fifth.

Tori Haug earned the complete game victory for the Eagles. Haug, who took a line drive off her knee cap early in the game, continued to finish the contest.

She allowed five hits and only one run, while striking out five batters and walking six.

Hannah Sattler was the losing pitcher for Colorado Mesa.

In game two, the Eagles bats continued to stay hot from game one. CSC scored all five of their runs in the first inning.

Garner drew a bases loaded walk that scored Bailey Steinke.

Jessie Henchenski and Laucomer proceeded to hit back to back two RBI doubles. Henchenski's double scored J'lyssa Martinez and Rothstein, while Laucomers scored Henchenski and Martinez-Lewis.

CSC held a 5-0 lead until the top of the third when Ashley Bradford, the 2022 RMAC Player of the Year, singled to right field scoring Bella Aragon.

In the top of the sixth inning, Crouch hit her second homerun of the day, this time scoring herself and Bradford, lowering the Maverick deficit to two.

Chadron States game two starting pitcher Delaney Farnsworth allowed a single to start the seventh inning and the Mavericks proceeded to use a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner into scoring position.

Farnsworth proceeded to force a pop up to first base and then struck out Bradford to end the game and give CSC a 5-3 victory.

Farnsworth finished the complete game victory allowing 11 hits but only three runs. She struck out six batters and walked zero.

Rothstein finished the game with three hits in three at bats, while scoring one run. Henchenski and Laucomer both had two RBI's in the victory.

Chadron State will continue the series with Colorado Mesa with another double header, tomorrow at 11 a.m.
