Eagles split Saturday with Fort Lewis

CHADRON, Neb. -- March 4, 2023 -- Fort Lewis defeated Chadron State 7-6 in game 1 Saturday before the Eagles won 9-1 in five innings during game two.

The win improved Chadron to 4-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Skyhawks are now 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Fort Lewis lead 5-0 after four innings in game 1 before Bailey Steinke hit a solo homerun, making the score 5-1. Catheryn Rodman hit a two-run homerun for the Skyhawks in the top of the 7th, extending the lead to six.

Chadron State started a seventh inning comeback with a Mackenzie Kroll RBI single, scoring Chloe Brown. Jessica Henchenski followed Kroll up with a 2 RBI single, making the score 7-4.

Sloane Quijas ground out to shortstop but an error by the Skyhawk defense advanced Henchenski to third and Kroll home.

After Steinke singled, Henchenski advanced home, making the score 7-6 but CSC was unable to score another run.

Steinke led the Eagles with four hits in five at bats, while scoring one run and having one RBI. Henchenski had a team high two RBI's. Rodman had five RBI's for the Skyhawks in game one.

Tori Haug took the loss for CSC. She allowed 11 hits, walked three batters and struck out seven in the complete game outing.

Caydee Farnworth and Amiee Shanks split the pitching duties for Fort Lewis. As a duo, they allowed 11 hits, walked five batters and struck out eight.

Chadron State's bats caught fire in game two, helping them earn the 9-1 victory.

Ashland Baca started the action for Chadron State, driving in Aliyah Rothstein with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

The Skyhawk's tied the game in the top of the second after a Chadron State defensive error.

CSC responded to the visitors run with a Henchenski two-run homerun in the top of the second, scoring her and Spears. A Rothstein single that scored Steinke also occurred in the inning, extending the Eagle's lead to 4-1.

In the third, the Eagles had two homeruns and two RBI doubles. Kroll started the action with a two-run home run that scored Spears again.

Henchenski hit a solo homerun, her second home run of the game. Steinke hit a two out double that scored Quijas and Rothstein scored Steinke the next at bat with an RBI double.

CSC extended their lead to 9-1 after the third inning runs, allowing them to win the game in five innings with the run rule.

Henchenski once again led CSC with three RBI's, while Rothstein and Kroll both had two. Spears, Henchenski and Steinke all scored two runs.

Delaney Farnsworth earned the victory for CSC. In five innings, she allowed four hits, walked two batters and struck out 10.

Amiee Shanks received the loss for Fort Lewis.

The two teams will have another double-header tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled at 11 a.m., in Chadron.
