SPEARFISH, S.D. -- April 16, 2023 -- The Chadron State College softball team defeated the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets in three of the four games played this weekend in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Black Hills lone victory occurred in the game one of the series.

Chadron State improves to 20-23 overall and 18-18 in RMAC play. The Yellow Jackets are now 5-31 in regular season and conference play.

Black Hills won game one 3-4 before CSC won the next three, 13-4, 3-2 and 5-1.
Â
CSC had two solo homeruns in the top of the first inning of game one, one from
Lauren Zimmerman and the other from
Ashland Baca.

The Yellow Jackets responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Â
Chadron State lowered their deficit to 3-4 in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to add another run.
Â
Tori Haug received the loss for the Eagles, falling to 5-14 on the year. The junior from Commerce City, Colorado, allowed nine hits while walking two batters and striking out four.

CSC had two errors in the loss.
Â
The Eagles responded in game two by scoring a run in every inning and run ruling their opponent in five innings.
Â
Scoring started with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Â
Baca reached first on a fielder's choice. The Yellow Jacket defense got the force out at third base but
Bailey Steinke was able to advance home.
Â
A passed ball added the second run for CSC, scoring
Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis.
Â
Jessie Henchenski singled to center field, bringing Baca home for CSC for the third run.
Â
After one run by Black Hills in the bottom of the first, Zimmerman hit a three-run double in the top of the second inning.
Sloane Quijas's RBI single in the inning would bring home Zimmerman, giving CSC a 7-1 lead.

Martinez-Lewis would add one more run in the top of the third, advancing home on a wild pitch.

After a second run for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the third, CSC would add three more runs in the fourth inning.

First,
Mackenzi Kroll hit a two RBI homer to center field. Henchenski would add another RBI to her stat line with a solo homerun, giving the Eagles a 11-2 lead.

Baca finished the scoring for CSC in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI homer, scoring herself and Rothstein.
Â
Delaney Farnsworth improved to 13-9 with the complete game victory. In five innings, she allowed six hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Zimmerman and Baca each had three RBI's for CSC in the victory.
Â
Chadron State's bats stayed hot in the third game of the series.
Â
Zimmerman started the games scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun.
Â
A Henchenski single in the inning brought home Martinez-Lewis, giving CSC a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Yellow Jackets responded with a two-run homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Kroll would add her second homerun of the series in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Eagles the 3-2 victory.

On her birthday, Haug improved to 6-14. In seven innings, she struck out three batters and walked two while allowing seven hits.

Chadron State led from start to finish in the fourth and final game of the series.

A Zimmerman grounder in the top of the first inning allowed CSC's baserunners to advance a base, scoring Steinke.
Â
CSC added another run with a similar situation in the inning. Baca grounded out to third base but
Aliyah Rothstein was able to score.
Â
Two more runs were added by the Eagles in the top of the third. Zimmerman advanced to second and Martinez-Lewis scored on a wild pitch, giving CSC a 3-0 lead.

The second run of the inning was added on a Baca double, scoring Zimmerman.
Â
The final run by Chadron State was scored on another wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning.
Brady Laucomer advanced to second while Henchenski scored, giving CSC the 5-1 victory.

Farnsworth improved to 14-9 with her second win of the weekend. The freshman from Centennial, Colorado, struck out five batters and allowed eight hits.

Chadron State is back in action next weekend when they travel to face University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.
