Eagles defeat Orediggers for first time in five years

CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College men's wrestling team defeated Colorado School of Mines for the first time in five years on Friday night, winning 22-12 in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
 
Chadron State was victorious at 125, 133, 141, 174, 184 and 285 to improve their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Orediggers drop to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
 
A ranked matchup at 125 pounds started the dual between #7 Quade Smith, a junior from Layton, Utah and #17 Christian Lopez. Smith gained an early advantage with a takedown and four near fall points. Lopez ended the period with a first period escape.
 
The third and final period started with another Smith takedown before another Lopez escape, giving Smith an 11-2 major decision.
 
#2 Quen Campbell earned a victory at 133 pounds with a 9-3 decision. Campbell, a redshirt senior from Tifton, Georgia used one takedown, a reversal and four near fall points to win.
 
At 141 pounds, #17 Ethan Leake, a redshirt senior from Clovis, California, needed overtime to beat #8 Grayston DiBlasi. Knotted at one a piece heading to overtime, Leake scored a takedown with 30 seconds left in overtime 1 to earn the SV-1 4-1 victory.
 
The Eagles had a streak of three consecutive losses at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. The Orediggers three victories came by way of two decisions and one major decision.
 
#10 Logan Berger, a redshirt freshman from Hartsville, South Carolina, gave fans another exciting match at 174 pounds. Berger used a late third period takedown to defeat #11 Wyatt Reisz 5-4. The Orediggers received an unsportsmanlike penalty at the conclusion of the match to lose a team point.
 
Another exciting match took place at 184 pounds that ended in Keegan Gehlhausen's favor. Gehlhausen, a redshirt sophomore from Pinedale, Wyoming, gained an early 11-3 lead at the end of the second period. His opponent, Mason Diel, scored seven third period points to lower the deficit to 11-10 but was unable to overcome Gehlhausens early lead.
 
The Orediggers final victory occurred at 197 pounds with a 13-8 decision.
 
Mason Watt, a redshirt senior from Broomfield, Colorado, earned the only pin of the day at 285 pounds. While leading 11-0, Watt pinned Cade Whish in 4:46.
 
Chadron State has two important RMAC duals on the road next. They will face Western Colorado on January 27 in Gunnison before facing Colorado Mesa on Saturday the 28.
