CSC wrestlers win 25-15 over Mesa Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Chadron State College wrestling team won the first seven matches while defeating the Colorado Mesa Mavericks 25-15 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual in Grand Junction on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Brett Hunter's team now has a 7-1 dual record and is 5-0 against RMAC rivals.  Mesa is now 5-3 and 3-3. Mesa won last year's dual in Chadron 28-16. The Eagles defeated the Mavericks for the first time in five years.

The Eagles' first five contestants—Quade Smith at 125 pounds, Quen Campbell at 133, Ethan Leake at 141, Torry Early at 149 and Clayton Robinson at 157—all earned three points by decisions, good for 15 total points.

After that, Chadron State's Jaziah Whaley posted a 14-4 major decision at 165 pounds and Logan Berger pinned his 174-pound opponent in 4:53, netting 10 more points for the Eagles.

Mesa won the final three weight classes and earned bonus points in each of them. Jason Bynarowicz managed a first period pin at 184 pounds, Gabriel Carranza scored a 9-0 major decision at 197 and Tyler Doyle came away with a 23-7 technical fall at 285 pounds, or heavyweight.

Robinson's match was the closest of the matches the Eagles won.  The final score was 7-5 in overtime. The wins by Smith, Leake and Early were all by three points. Early was taken down three times by his 149-pound opponent while he had just one takedown. But Early followed his takedown with a four-point nearfall and also escaped three times during his 10-7 victory.

Campbell, last year's 133-pound national tournament runner-up, was taken down early in his bout with the Mavericks' Oran Huff, but soon escaped. Campbell added a two-point nearfall in the second frame, then tallied 10 points in the third period to win 14-7.  Huff got nothing but escape points after his quick takedown.

The Eagles will host defending Super Region VI champion Adams State at 6 p.m. Friday in the Chicoine Center.
