SPEARFISH, S.D. - Chadron State defeated Black Hills State in four sets in a nonconference matchup Friday in Spearfish, earning a 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 25-13 win over the Yellow Jackets. With the win, the Eagles improved their record to 4-10 overall.
Kally Kirkwood led Chadron State with 12 kills and had a .444 hitting percentage while Alondra Hernandez had 19 digs. As a team the Eagles hit .307 with 56 kills and 10 errors. The Yellow Jackets hit .156 as a team with 51 kills and 26 errors.
In the first set, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to open up a 8-4 lead taking advantage of back-to-back attack errors. The Eagles extended their lead to 12-7 after back-to-back kills by Mataya Ward and an error by Yellow Jackets. A service error and kill by Carsyn Mettler stopped the damage, but three attack errors by the Yellow Jackets maintained the Eagles lead making the score 15-9. The Yellow Jackets found a way to close the lead after 2 errors and a kill by Mettler. However, a 3-0 run helped the Eagles pull ahead 24-18. A kill by Alejandra Briseno ended the first set 25-19.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead early in the second set. After a service error, BHSU used three kills, one by Carsyn Mettler and two by Abigail Renner, to make the score 4-0. A kill by Bella Adams started a 6-0 run for the Eagles, with Rylee Ward contributing three aces during that run to make the score 7-5. The Eagles maintained the lead until the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run, taking the lead 15-14. However, the Eagles took back the lead after going on an 8-0 run with four kills from Briseno and three kills from Kirkwood, making the score 24-17. A service error ended the set 25-19 for Chadron State.
The third set started off close until the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead 15-11. After a kill from Kirkwood, the Yellow Jackets responded with three kills from Mettler and an ace by Ellie Thomas to make the score 19-12, Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets maintained the lead for the rest of the set. A kill by Mettler ended the set 25-21, Black Hills State.
The Eagles jumped to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set, using three errors and a kill from Aiyana Fujiyama to help build that lead. A 4-0 run extended the Eagles lead to 17-10. A kill by Kirkwood ended the fourth set 25-13.
Chadron State will take the court next on Friday, October 11 at 6 p.m. against UCCS. The Mountain Lions are 7-6 and 2-2 in RMAC play.
