Eagles drop first two games at Florida Tech Tourney

LONGWOOD, Colo. -- The Chadron State College softball team was no-hit in a 5-0 loss to Barry University before falling to Bentley University 3-1 in day one of the Florida Tech Tournament in Longwood, Florida.
 
The losses drop the Eagles to 0-8 to begin the season.
 
In the loss to Barry, Brooklyn Levin received the loss to drop to 0-4. The freshman from Littleton, Colorado allowed seven hits and five runs, all being earned, in 4.2 innings of work. She walked and struck out three batters. Kenzi Garner, a junior from Broomfield, Colorado, pitched 1.1 innings of relief in which she did not allow a hit.
 
The wining pitcher was Alexis Martin, who threw a no-hitter in game one of the tournament. Martin, in seven innings of work, struck out three batters and walked two.  
 
Barry scored their runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. All of their runs occurred with two outs.
 
In the Eagles loss to Bentley, CSC got on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Sophia Brennan, a freshman from Wahoo, Nebraska, singled through the left side, bringing pinch runner Jolynn Niegocki home.
 
The Eagles had the bases loaded with one out in the inning but were only able to bring one run home and left the bases loaded.
 
The Falcons quickly tied the game in the top of the first inning due to an error by the CSC defense. The Eagles had a total of three errors in the loss.
 
Bentley added their other two runs in the top of the fourth, both being scored due to two more Chadron State defensive errors.
 
The Eagles had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on second and third base but were unable to convert.
 
Tori Haug, a senior from Commerce City, Colorado, received the loss on the mound. In 7.0 innings of work, she allowed nine hits while walking and striking out four batters. All three runs were unearned.
 
A stretch of ten games over six days ends tomorrow with matchups against Florida Tech and Saint Anselm College.
