CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College softball team split Friday afternoon's double header against the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions, falling 3-1 in game one before winning game two, 4-1.
CSC is now 4-16 overall and 4-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mountain Lions are now 10-9 overall and 7-3 in RMAC action.
In the game one defeat, the Eagles had five hits compared to the visitors seven.
With winds reaching upwards of 40 miles per hour during the day, Chadron State took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning in the first game. After a walk and single by the CSC offense,
Ashland Baca, a senior from Pueblo West, Colorado, doubled to right center to score
Angelina Quezada.
The Eagles ended the inning with runners stranded on second and third base.
UCCS tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI single.
In the top of the fifth, Maddie Unrein hit a leadoff solo homer to put the guests up 2-1. The Mountain Lions scored one more run in the inning on an RBI single to lead 3-1.
Chadron State was unable to score another run in the game, going three up-three down in the sixth inning before leaving a runners on second and first in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Autumn Kunze improve to 6-2 overall after receiving the victory in the circle for UCCS.
Tori Haug, a senior from Commerce City, Colorado, received the loss for CSC. Haug allowed seven hits and three runs in the complete game showing.
In game two, the Eagles once again gained an early lead, in which they were able to hold on to for the 4-1 victory.
In the bottom of the first,
Brady Laucomer hit a leadoff single to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Quezada and
Jessie Henchenski being hit by a pitch, Baca hit another double to score Laucomer.
Two batters later,
Mackenzi Kroll, a senior from Brighton, Colorado, hit a double of her own, scoring Henchenski and Baca.
The Mountain Lions made the score 3-1 in the top of the third inning with an RBI single but Chadron State gained the run back in the fourth.
Laucomer, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, hit a single to begin the inning. With one out, Henchenski, a senior from Fort Collins, Colorado, reached safely on a fielder's choice and Laucomer remained safe at second base.
Baca continued her excellent play on the day by loading the bases with a single before the Mountain Lions walked in Laucomer for CSC's fourth and final run of the game.
In the victory, Chadron State had eight hits. The Mountain Lions also had eight hits and one error.
Kenzi Garner, a junior from Broomfield, Colorado, earned the victory in the circle to improve to 2-5. Garner struck out four batters and walked zero.
Offensively, Chadron State left 20 runners on base in the two games.
CSC and UCCS will play another double-header tomorrow at 11 a.m.
