RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team went on a 15-4 run in the first 5 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter en route to downing Chadron State 53-47 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played in Rapid City
on Friday night.
The Eagles led 23-22 at halftime and 33-31 at the end of the third period. But the Lady Hardrockers made eight of their 17 field goals, including three of their four 3-pointers, in the last frame while evening the season series with Chadron State.
CSC won the game played in Chadron on Feb. 2 by a 70-67 tally. As the scores indicate, neither team was as productive offensively in the second game. Each of them shot just 32% from the field
Friday night.
Mines sophomore Savea Mansfield was the game's leading scorer with 13 points while going 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Teammate Naomi Hidalgo was next with 12.
Chadron State was led by
Olivia Waufle with 10 points, followed by
Allison Olsen and
Awoti Akoi with nine apiece.
Each of the team's leading scorers for the season, Shay Powers for the Eagles and Piper Bauer for the Hardrockers, finished with eight points.
Mines is now 7-10 for the season and 7-14 in the RMAC. Chadron State is 6-20 and 4-17.
Both teams will play their final game of the season Saturday, when the Eagles visit Black Hills State and Mines hosts Colorado Christian.
