SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Junior Natalie Keni went off for a career high in kills while
Alondra Hernandez collected 24 digs on the day, but the Chadron State volleyball team lost a pair of three-set matches on Friday in Southern California.
The Eagles fell to Vanguard in their first match of the day 19-25, 20-25, 13-25. The Lions, who advanced to the national NAIA quarterfinals a year ago, are in their first year as a member of NCAA Division II and the Pacific West Conference. CSC later lost to Canadian NCAA school Simon Fraser 15-25, 24-26, 16-25.
Head coach
Jennifer Stadler continued to tinker with the Eagles lineup, as 16 players saw the court against Vanguard while 15 took the floor against SFU. Seven players participated in all six sets the Eagles played on Friday – seniors
Alondra Hernandez, and
Kendyl Kirkwood, junior
Bella Adams, sophomores
Kally Kirkwood and
Avery Lacy, and transfers
Alejandra Briseno and
Sofia Langer.
Hernandez, a libero from Provo, Utah, has done her part defensively with double-digit digs in each of Chadron State's first three matches. Hernandez racked up 11 digs against Vanguard before tallying 13 against Simon Fraser, leading the team in both matches.
Natali Keni led the Eagles with a career-high seven kills against Vanguard, surpassing her previous career high of six nearly two years ago. Briseno, a transfer from Hutchison CC, added five kills for Chadron State in the opener. The Eagles had five service aces against the Lions, three by
Avery Lacy and two by
Bella Adams.
Against Simon Fraser,
Kally Kirkwood paced CSC's attacking unit with six kills against two attack errors. Adams and freshman
Mataya Ward tied for second on the team for the game with four kills apiece. Senior
Aiyana Fujiyama had a team-high three blocks against the Red Leafs.
Chadron State falls to 0-3 with the two losses. The Eagles will play their final game in California on Saturday morning against Cal State San Marcos, one of the co-hosts of the invite. The Cougars are 0-2 this season, losing in four sets to Simon Fraser and in three sets to Vanguard earlier this weekend.
Saturday's match is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. Mountain time on the campus of Point Loma University. It is available to stream on pay-per-view via the PacWest Network.
