GOLDEN, Colo. – Chadron State men's wrestling came up short in its first RMAC dual of the season, falling 21-13 to No. 16-ranked Colorado School of Mines in the Orediggers' gym in Golden, Colorado.
The Eagles won four of the 10 official bouts, with
James Davis (133 pounds),
Torry Early (149), No. 7
Keegan Gehlhausen (184) and
Cody Pinkerton (285) earning victories. Gehlhausen was the only Eagle to earn bonus points.
Chadron State is now 0-1 in RMAC duals in 2024-25 after going a perfect 8-0 last season. Colorado School of Mines improved to 7-1 in duals overall with a 1-0 RMAC record.
Chadron State suffered a key setback during the dual-opening 125-pound showdown between No. 9-ranked true freshman
Hunter Jacobsen and reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week Christian Lopez. Jacobsen was leading the Mines redshirt senior 6-2 after nearly two periods, but Lopez scored a two-point reversal at the buzzer of period two.
Jacobsen used his injury time between the second and third periods and had a limp for the rest of the match. Lopez outscored the hobbled Jacobsen 6-1, with the riding time point included, in the third period to win a 10-7 decision and stake Mines to a lead.
The Eagles earned decision victories from
James Davis (2-0 at 133) and
Torry Early (5-0 at 149), but the only fall of the dual came at 141 pounds, with Mines's No. 4-ranked Grayston DiBlasi pinning
Cyrus Wells for a crucial six-pointer that helped Mines lead 9-6 after four bouts despite the teams each having two victories.
Mines then earned three consecutive decision victories at 157, 165 and 174 before
Keegan Gehlhausen put the Eagles back in it with an 11-2 major-decision victory at 184. Despite losing ground in the middle weights, the Eagles were mathematically in the dual until the second-to-last match of the contest at 197 pounds.
Sophomore
Dominic Joyce battled valiantly with No. 14-ranked Ryan Cody, trailing 3-0 early but rallying to send the match to overtime tied at 5-5. Cody came through with a sudden-death takedown in the extra period to clinch the dual for the Orediggers despite Pinkerton's 5-1 decision win at heavyweight to close things out.
Chadron State will continue its RMAC schedule with the Eagles' first home dual of the season next Friday, January 17 against Colorado Mesa. The dual is set to start at 6 p.m. after the conclusion of a women's dual between the Eagles and Mavericks.
