Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Paxton Ritchey

No. 7 Tigers Don't Miss vs. Eagle Women's Hoops

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State, the No. 7-ranked team in the country, shot 82 percent from the field in the first half and otherwise rode their high-powered offense to a 92-49 win over Chadron State in a nonconference women's basketball game played in Kansas on Friday evening.

Kenna Wagner led the way with 10 points for the Eagles while Dreanna Jackson added a CSC career-high nine points on 4 of 8 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 on attempts inside the three-point line. McKenzi Petersen and Ella Moser added eight points apiece.

Fort Hays State, which moved up from No. 8 to No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches Poll released on December 16, improved to 10-1 this season. Chadron State will enter a three-week competitive Christmas break at 0-9 overall with an 0-4 RMAC record.

The Tigers were 10 of 15 in the first quarter and shot a perfect 13-for-13 from the field in the second quarter as they built a 53-25 halftime cushion. Fort Hays State led by 44 (79-35) after three quarters before Chadron State rallied to outscore the home team 14-13 in the final period.

While the Tigers made a lot of the shots they took, the Eagles did a good job of preventing FHSU from putting shots up. Chadron State forced Fort Hays into 24 turnovers, which are both the most that Fort Hays has committed in a game this season and the most that the Eagles have forced in a game this season.

Among the 24 turnovers were 13 Chadron State steals, also a CSC season high. Alex Ridenour had four steals in a career-high 16 minutes played while Ella Moser had three. Dreanna Jackson and McKenzi Petersen had two steals and a block apiece.

Overall, Chadron State shot 30.6 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from three and 2.5 percent (5-8) from the line. While the hosts cooled slightly from their first-half pace, the Tigers still shot 69.8 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from deep and 72.7 percent from the line. Fort Hays also outrebounded the Eagles 39-22 and had 30 assists compared to CSC's eight.

Fort Hays received big offensive days from Olivia Mortensen (27 points, 12-13 FG), Talexa Weeter (22 points, seven rebounds, 8-11 FG) and Brooke Loewe (13 assists). Weeter, who is Division II's leading scorer, still came in under her 27.5 points per game season average.

Chadron State will next take the court on January 8 against Colorado School of Mines and January 10 against Regis. Chadron State's next home game will be Thursday, January 15 against Adams State.
