SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Three Chadron State College contestants were runners-up in roping events at the Sheridan College rodeo this past weekend. Two more CSC entries also placed among the top six.
The second place finishers are senior Sid Miller of Merna, Neb. in tie down roping, senior Layne Palmer of Kadoka, S.D. in team roping and freshman Shaylee Porch of Wamblee, S.D. in breakaway roping.
Miller was the 10th and last finals qualifier with a time of 13.3 seconds in the tie-down roping long go-round, but he caught and tied his second calf in 11.0 seconds to claim second in the finals as well as second overall. The rodeo had 58 tie down ropers.
Palmer was the team roping header while Kyler Clark of the University of Wyoming served as the heeler in that event, which had 81 entries. Palmer and Clark placed fourth in the first go-round in 6.8 seconds and were second in the finals with an 11.7 run to also take runner-up honors for the event.
Porch barely squeezed into the finals of breakaway roping, which had 120 contestants, after catching her first calf in 3.8 seconds. She went much quicker in the finals, with a time of 2.7 seconds to earn second in that go-round and second overall.
Other CSC entries who also made the top six are sophomore Leighton Sander of Custer, S.D., who scored 76 and 77 points on the bareback broncs that he rode to finish fourth in the final standings, and senior Shelby Derner of New Underwood, S.D., who placed sixth in the final standings among the 110 barrel racers with times of 17.72 and 17.90 seconds.
Another CSC contestant, senior Jess Harper of Faith, S.D., and his brother, Drew, who attends Gillette College, tied for second and third with a time of 6.7 seconds in the opening go-round of team roping, but they didn't catch both ends of the critter in the finals and did not place in the top six in their event.
Lamar College, located in southeastern Colorado, will be the site of this weekend's rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.
