Biography

2012: Placed on the USA Football News Preseason All-American First Team … Also a preseason All-RMAC choice … “The sky is the limit for Garrett,” head coach Jay Long said. “We are really looking for big things from him.” … Has received plenty of interest from NFL teams and several scouts have visited preseason practices … In the team’s conditioning test, he bench pressed 225 pounds more than 30 times.
2011: Started all nine games he played in at left tackle ... He missed the first two games of the season because his appendix burst two hours before the season opener … He missed the following week but returned in top form against Western State despite playing in much pain … A consistent blocker who helped lead the Eagles’ running backs rush for nearly 150 yards a game ... Chadron State also averaged over 230 yards through the air ... Named to the Beyond Sports Network 2011 Preseason All-American Team, featuring the top players from FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools ... Following the season, he worked extensively with former Chadron State great and NFL wide receiver, Don Beebe, on footwork and speed ... Been timed at 5.3 in the 40-yard dash.
2010: Started all 11 games at left tackle and was a big reason why the Eagles fielded two of the top four tailbacks in the RMAC and boasted the third-best rushing offense (200.5 yards/game) in the conference … The Eagles also had the fourth-highest passing offense (206.8) in the conference … Was placed on the RMAC All-Conference First Team  … Garrett joined the CSC men’s basketball team midway through the season and played a reserve role … He was a huge fan favorite, though, and played in six games, scoring four points, grabbing four rebounds and most notably, committing eight fouls in 16 minutes.
2009: Played in the final six games, starting two of them - victories over Western New Mexico and Fort Lewis.
2008: Redshirted during his first season at CSC.
High School: A two-year starter at Aurora Christian High School, who helped lead his team to a 12-1 record and a trip to the state semifinals …. He was named to the all-area and all-conference teams for his performance … Also participated in track, baseball and wrestling ... A straight-A student in high school.
Personal: Found out about Chadron State College after talking to his high school football coach, Don Beebe … He said he was “sold” on the college and its football program after making the 14-hour trip to Chadron … Majoring in special education … Son of Cary and Catherine Gilkey ... Has four sisters, Hilary, Hannah, Mallory and Chloe … Born July 9.
