Free throws help CSU-Pueblo men defeat Eagles 70-63

The Colorado State-Pueblo men's basketball team was shooting just 53 percent from the free throw line after its first six games, but meshed 18 of 20 shots from the line Thursday night while defeating the Chadron State Eagles 70-63 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in Chadron. The Pueblo men were just 1-1 from the free throw line in the first half, when Chadron State built a precarious 32-29 lead. But the T-Wolves connected on 17 of 19 from the charity stripe in the second half, including all six shots in the final 47 seconds to seal the verdict. Meanwhile, Chadron State was just eight of 16 from the line in the second half and 12 of 23 for the game. Neither team burned the nets from the field. Pueblo, now 5-4, hit just 39 percent and Chadron State 42 percent. Pueblo had just five turnovers; the Eagles 12. The score was knotted at 59-59 with 2:32 to play. Twenty seconds later, senior guard Luis Marquez received a pass from center Steve Raquet and drained a 3-pointer from the left corner to give his team the lead for keeps. After both teams failed to score on their next possessions, the ThunderWolves stuck the dagger in the Eagles' heart when Raquet stole an inbounds pass at midcourt and drove to the basket for a dunk. The Eagles were now forced to foul, and guard Brett Cloepful bagged all four of his free tosses for his only points of the night and Major Willette sank a pair. Willette, a 6-1 junior from Phoenix, led the winners with 19 points. Raquet added 14 to go with a game-high eight rebounds and Marquez contributed 11. Adisa Tobin paced CSC, now 4-6, with 17 points. Theo Donley tallied 11.
