Box Score CHADRON – Four Colorado School of Mines men's basketball players scored in double figures as the No. 18 Orediggers survived Chadron State's spirited upset effort 86-80 Saturday evening at Armstrong Gymnasium.
The Eagles, now 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, went toe-to-toe with the Orediggers (7-0, 3-0 RMAC) but Mines connected on 27 of 35 free throws and outscored CSC 45-28 in the paint to earn its tough win.
Mines, which entered Saturday's game outscoring its opponents by more than 30 points a game, was out rebounded for the first time this season as Chadron State finished with a 33-32 advantage on the glass. The Eagles also sank 10 3-pointers, the highest total Mines has allowed all season.
The Orediggers had a consistent scoring effort to balance Chadron State's long range shooting. Luke Meisch led all scorers with 19 points and Trevor Wages added 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Brian Muller scored 14 points, including nine of 11 from the charity stripe, and Brett Green chipped in 11.
Evan Brooks paced Chadron State with 18 points,
Zac Bargen added 17 and
Kendrick Holliman scored 14 points off the bench.
The game was nip and tuck throughout, particularly late. After Bargen sank two foul shots to cut Mines' lead to 74-72, Meisch rattled in a 3-pointer and Green added two free throws to push its lead to 79-74 with 1:50 to play.
Chadron State didn't go away and cut the Orediggers' lead to two points twice in the final minute, however, Mines made all six of its free throws to seal its win.
Chadron State will host Colorado Christian today in an afternoon game. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
