Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – Chadron State quarterback
Jonn McLain completed 22 of 29 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns and tailback
Glen Clinton scored twice while rushing for 114 yards to lead the Eagles to a 35-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Western State Saturday.
Â
The 21st ranked Eagles, now 3-1 and 2-0 in the conference, led wire-to-wire and scored 21 straight points in the second half to overpower the winless Mountaineers.
Â
The Eagles' offense was balanced, gaining 279 yards on the ground and completing 23 of 30 passes for 245 yards. They had as many first downs – 35 – as they did points and gained 524 yards on 84 plays.
Â
Western State, which accumulated 258 yards and also had as many first downs as it did points, found pay dirt on back-to-back plays. The Mountaineers' first touchdown came on fourth down as time expired in the first half when Chris Morgan caught a 2-yard pass. Then, they cut the Eagles' lead to 14-13 when running back Austin Ekeler gashed through the defense on a 65-yard scamper on the first play of the second half.
Â
However, Chadron State responded with a 14-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Clinton, who rushed for over 100 yards in the fourth-straight game, accounted for 36 of those yards and his 1-yard scoring plunge – his sixth of the season – gave the Eagles a 21-13 advantage midway through the third quarter.
Â
Following a Western State punt, the Eagles marched 70 yards in just six plays and
Cody Roes gave CSC some more breathing room after he caught a 43-yard touchdown strike from McLain.
Â
The Eagles continued their strong play in the fourth quarter as
Michael Madkins broke free for a 34-yard rushing touchdown to put the game away.
Â
Despite the quick scores from the Mountaineers, the Chadron State defense put together an impressive performance. The Eagles allowed just 159 yards in the second half – 65 of it coming on one play – and they allowed Western State to have the ball for less than 10 minutes the final two quarters.
Â
Middle linebacker
Shea Koch led the Chadron State defense with eight tackles and the other starting linebackers –
Dylan Furrier and
Bryant Miller – each had six apiece.
Â
The Eagles owned a 14-0 advantage for much of the first half. Clinton scored on a 2-yard plunge late in the first quarter and
Danny O'Boyle caught a 5-yard pass from McLain early in the second quarter.
Â
Chadron State's offense was crisp. McLain completed over 75 percent of his passes, three receivers had over 50 yards, and three tailbacks rushed for at least 40 yards.
Travis Reeves finished with a game-high seven receptions for 56 yards and
Chapman Ham added five receptions for 65 yards. Roes, who scored on a 43-yard play, had two catches for 50 yards.
Â
While Clinton did a majority of the damage, Chadron State's stable of tailbacks also proved their worth.
Cody Paul had eight carries for 78 yards – all in the fourth quarter – and Madkins rushed for 41 yards on seven carries.
