CSU-Pueblo outlasts CSC, 41-13

PUEBLO, Colo. – Chris Bonner threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns and Cameron McDondle rushed for 167 yards and added two scores as the No. 14-ranked Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves rolled to a 41-13 victory over Chadron State College Saturday.

With the win, Pueblo improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Chadron State, which will host Black Hills State Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m., falls to 4-3 and 3-2 in the league.

Any thoughts that Pueblo would still be staggering from its stunning 23-22 upset loss to Fort Lewis last weekend in Durango were dismissed on the ThunderWolves' opening play when Bonner connected with Kieran Duncan on a 59-yard touchdown pass.

Following a Chadron State three-and-out, the ThunderWolves struck again by marching 68 yards in four plays. McDondle capped the drive off with his 29-yard scoring rumble and just five minutes into the first quarter, Pueblo led 14-0.

The Eagles stemmed the tide on their next possession by driving to Pueblo's 6-yard and Randy Wentz kicked a 23-yard field goal. Wentz also booted a 47-yard field goal – his third straight game converting a 47-yarder – later in the first quarter. The ThunderWolves' quick strike offense answered yet again in the first quarter, driving 70 yards in four plays, and Bonner hit Trent Thompson for a 15-yard score.

Both teams traded turnovers in the second quarter and Pueblo took a 24-6 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was also pedestrian. Greg O'Donnell's 32-yard field goal provided the only scoring and Pueblo led 27-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Chadron State's offense found its legs in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jonn McLain, who completed 31 of 49 passes for 303 yards, hooked up with inside receiver Kyle Hooper four times on gains of 10, 11, 20 and three yards that carried the Eagles to the ThunderWolves' 14-yard line. Danny O'Boyle added a short reception to the 10 and CSC seemed primed to score. However, Pueblo's LaRon Tarkington intercepted McLain's next pass and the ThunderWolves didn't waste their opportunity. They drove 90 yards in seven plays and McDondle thundered in for an 18-yard score.

Chadron State responded with its only touchdown of the day – a 3-yard run from Michael Madkins – but Pueblo scored one play after the Eagles attempted an onside kick. For the game, Pueblo scored four of its five touchdowns in four plays or less.

Hooper led the Chadron State receivers with six receptions for 78 yards. Kyle Vinich had five catches for 50 yards and Madkins had eight receptions for 47 yards. Cody Paul led all running backs with 55 yards and Pueblo native Derek Jackson chipped in 51.

Dylan Furrier led the CSC defense with 10 tackles. Lane Haller, who forced a fumble and had an interception in the end zone, finished with nine tackles.
