Eagles turn back Skyhawks, 28-16

DURANGO, Colo. – The Chadron State College football team scored 21 unanswered points late in the second half to fend off a feisty Fort Lewis squad for a 28-16 victory in the season finale for both teams.

With the win, Chadron State finishes the season with an 8-3 record, including a 7-2 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Eagles, who celebrated their 100th season of football in September, have won at least eight games 25 times.

Quarterback Jonn McLain completed 24 of 32 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns to lead the CSC attack. McLain, a senior from Chadron, went 32-14 under center for the Eagles during his career.  He's the first quarterback to ever throw for more than 10,000 yards at Chadron State, finishing with 10,115.

On Saturday, McLain spread his completions around to six wide receivers. Kyle Vinich had eight catches for 133 yards and scored two touchdowns and Danny O'Boyle added four catches for 85 yards and a TD.

Michael Madkins carried the ball 18 times for 91 yards and scored a 13-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the Eagles' victory.

For much of the game, though, Fort Lewis owned the upper hand and dominated the time of possession 38:40 to 21:20. The Skyhawks (3-8, 2-7 RMAC) had a 9-7 lead at halftime thanks to three field goals from Kipp Castanha and they opened up a 16-7 lead midway through the third quarter when Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out.

Waalani-Arroyo rushed for 143 yards in the game and Fort Lewis finished with 295 yards on the ground.

After Waalani-Arroyo's TD run, the Eagles responded with a nine-play, 83-yard scoring drive. McLain completed six of seven passes to four different receivers before he found Vinich all alone for a 19-yard score.

The Eagles' defense forced Fort Lewis to punt after three plays on its next drive and the Eagles marched 99 yards in nine plays to take control. Madkins ran for 29 yards on four carries and Vinich had two receptions for 57 yards, including a 21-yard TD, that gave CSC a 22-16 advantage.

Chadron State's defense came up big again on Fort Lewis' next drive, forcing the Skyhawks to turn the ball over on downs after failing to convert a first down on fourth and 3 from the Eagles' 15-yard line. The two teams traded punts their next two possessions before Madkins carried the ball four times for 40 yards and a touchdown on the Eagles' next drive to put the game away.

The Eagles' defense finished with exactly 100 tackles. Dylan Furrier led the way with 14 stops but four others reached double digits. Isaac Holscher finished with 12, Cole Montgomery had 11, an interception and broke up three passes, and Collin Eisenman and Ryan Wood both had 10 tackles.
