Billings shoots past CSC in home opener

CHADRON – Nine players found the scoring column for Chadron State but Montana State University-Billings' Quinn Peoples and Alisha Breen both scored 19 points to lead the Yellowjackets to a 78-52 non-conference victory Tuesday at the Chicoine Events Center in Chadron.
 
Kate Simonton, who hit five of nine shots from the field, including two 3-pointers, paced the Eagles (0-2) with 12 points and three assists. Three other Chadron State players – Hattie Guzman, Stephanie Knowles and Kayla Mathews – chipped in seven points. Knowles also tied for a team-high six rebounds and three blocks.
 
Also for Chadron State, which shot 20 of 55 from the field (36.4 percent) and six of 15 from the charity stripe, Maka Daysh scored five points and grabbed four boards and Maddie Metzger added five points.
 
Peoples, Breen and Kayleen Goggins paced a balanced scoring attack for the Yellowjackets (2-1). Peoples had a double double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, Breen had 19 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks, and Goggins finished with 18 points and three steals. The trio combined to make 18 of 36 from the field and five of the team's six 3-pointers.
 
For the game, MSU-Billings hit 26 of 60 from the field (43.3 percent) and 20 of 31 from the foul line. The Yellowjackets out-rebounded the Eagles 48 to 33 and scored 10 points thanks to 17 offensive boards.

A bright spot for the Eagles was the play of their bench, outscoring Billings 21-11.
 
Chadron State will play at Wayne State Friday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
