CHADRON – Ten high school wrestlers signed National Letters of Intent to compete at Chadron State College, head coach
Brett Hunter announced Thursday.
Â
The 10 grapplers are from six different states. Three are from Colorado, two are Wyoming and California natives, and the remaining three student-athletes are from Arizona, Washington and Michigan.
Â
Kory Hudson, a 184-pounder from Bennett, Colo., compiled a career record of 145-34. He finished in fifth place at the Colorado State Tournament as a junior, and went 42-3 and won a state title as a senior.
Â
"Kory is a tough-nosed kid and he has a ton of upside," Hunter said.
Â
Brandon Wetsch, a native of Erie, Colo., finished in the top five of the Colorado State Tournament three times during his high school career. He was fifth as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and third as a senior.
Â
Wetsch, a projected 149-pounder at CSC, had a career record of 136-28. His older sister, Rebecca, is a junior outfielder on the Chadron State softball team.
Â
"I'm excited about Brandon's future," Hunter said. "He already fits the style of being a Chadron State wrestler."
Â
Cody Driver, a projected 184-pounder from Fountain, Colo., went 35-9 during his senior season and had a 62-21 record his final two seasons at Fountain-Fort Carson.
Â
"Cody continues to get better and will bring some great things to our program," Hunter said.
Â
The two Wyoming recruits wrapped up distinguished prep careers with state titles in 2014 for Campbell County High School in Gillette. Evan Smith, a 125-pound prospect, went 48-1 during his senior season en route to his state title. Smith also finished second as a junior and fourth as a sophomore at the state tourney. For his career, he compiled a record of 164-38.
Â
"Evan has made big strides each year and you can see he wants to do great things," Hunter said.
Â
Brendon MacKearney joined his teammate by winning a state title his senior season. He went 38-5 during his final year after finishing third as a junior. He is projected to compete at 197 or 285 pounds at Chadron State.
Â
"Brendon has the work ethic to do great things in college and he adds depth in the upper weights," Hunter said.
Â
The final five recruits are Kordell Provchy of Phoenix, Brian Guerrero of Rohnert Park, Calif., Jon Ramirez of Chino, Calif., Brock Thumm of Watervliet, Mich., and Anthony Raupp of Winlock, Wash.
Â
Provchy went 129-11 during his career at Westview High School in Arizona. He never lost more than six matches during a season and he finished as state runner-up in 2013. He's expected to wrestle at 165 pounds at CSC.
Â
"Kordell brings a lot to our program and I am excited to get him where he needs to be," Hunter said.
Â
Guerrero had a renowned career at Rancho Cotate High School. He was a three-time North Bay League champion and a three-time North Coast Section qualifier. He also qualified for the California State Tournament twice, was voted to the Redwood Empire First Team four times, and finished fifth at the Reno Worlds Tournament.
Â
He had a career record of 110-33 and is expected to compete at 125 or 133 pounds.
Â
"Brian has had a very successful career in arguably the toughest high school state in the country," Hunter said. "I expect him to be a contributor right away."
Â
Ramirez, a 149-pound prospect, placed first at the Las Vegas Freak Show wrestling tournament and had a career record of 92-22.
Â
Thumm, a 133-pounder from Michigan, is ranked No. 14 in the country by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine at 133 pounds. Thumm dominated his high school opponents while wrestling to a career record of 159-9. He won two state titles and had two perfect seasons.
Â
"Brock is a tremendous student-athlete who has dominated the sport of wrestling his entire career," Hunter said. "I'm looking forward to a successful career for him at Chadron State."
Â
The final wrestler to sign with the Eagles is Raupp, a 141-pounder from Washington. He finished in the top three at the state tournament three times and had a career record of 80-33.
Â
"Anthony adds quality depth in the mid to lighter weights and I'm expecting good things from him," Hunter said.
Â
Five wrestlers inked with the Eagles during the early signing period in November. They are Cooper Cogdill of Chadron, Johnny Porter of Bellevue and Chance Helmick of Beatrice, Zach Thompson of Powell, Wyo., and Ethan Haddock of Ridgecrest, Calif.
Â
Hunter also said Jake Weber and Tanner Wintholz are planning to wrestle for the Eagles this winter following the football season.
