Woodhead among top 3 Harlon Hill Trophy finalists

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The voting has concluded for the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year Award, and while the results of that voting won't be announced until December 15, three players have received invitations to attend the 21st Annual Harlon Hill Trophy Presentation Banquet for the naming of the top player in Division II. Senior quarterback Cullen Finnerty of Grand Valley State University, senior running back Germaine Race of Pittsburg State University and junior running back Danny Woodhead of Chadron State College have emerged as the top three vote-getters from a field of eight finalists in voting by the sports information directors at the 150-plus schools that compete in Division II football and the Division II conference sports information directors. The Hill Trophy is sponsored by Coca-Cola, the City of Florence, Ala., Trustmark Construction, the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa, Opti-Net and Herff Jones. Candidates for the 2006 Hill Trophy were nominated by the sports information directors at their respective schools and those nominations were then reviewed by the Hill Regional Advisory Committees, which trimmed the list of candidates. National voting concluded on December 1 and the top three finishers are invited to the Shoals for the presentation banquet. The winner of the 2006 award, which is presented by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee, will be announced at the Harlon Hill Trophy and Division II Football Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, December 15 in Florence, prior to the NCAA Division II Football Championship Game on Dec. 16. Tickets are $45 each or $360 for a table of eight and can be purchased by calling the Shoals Chamber of Commerce at (256) 764-4661. Other finalists for the 2006 award were 2005 Hill Trophy winner Jimmy Terwilliger, quarterback at East Stroudsburg University, quarterback Scott Eyster of Delta State University, running back Stefan Logan of the University of South Dakota, running back Lorenzo Perry of Bryant University, and Albany State University defensive lineman Alton Pettway. Finnerty, a senior from Brighton, Michigan, has led his team to a perfect 13-0 record and No. 1 ranking heading into this Saturday's NCAA semifinal against Delta State. Finnerty has completed 164 of 280 passes for 2,630 yards and 34 touchdowns to lead Division II in passing efficiency. He has been intercepted only nine times. He also ranks nationally in total offense with 236.2 yards per game. During his career he has led Grand Valley State to two national championships and his 47 career wins as a starter makes him one of the winngest quarterbacks in college football history. Race, a senior from Warrensburg, Mo., finished fourth in the Hill Trophy voting in 2005 and is among the Division II leaders in three categories this season. He became the leading rusher in Division II history Saturday as he closed his collegiate career with 6,985 yards on the ground. He is also the all-time leading scorer on any level of NCAA football with 658 points. He carried the ball 310 times for 1,944 yards and scored 31 rushing touchdowns this season. His 162.0 rushing average places him fifth in Division II and he is eighth in all-purpose yards with 165.3 per game. Race is second nationally in scoring this season as well. Woodhead, a junior from North Platte, Neb., is a Hill candidate for the third straight season and a finalist for the first time. His incredible season has him leading Division II in rushing, scoring and all-purpose yards, while also leading Chadron to an unbeaten regular-season record and to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. Woodhead broke the NCAA single-season rushing record with 2,756 yards and scored 38 touchdowns this season. He averaged 212 rushing yards per game, 250 all-purpose yards and 17.5 points.
