No. 22 Mines upends CSC, 33-18

CHADRON – Quarterback Justin Dvorak rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns and added 198 yards and a TD through the air to lead the No. 22-ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers to a 33-18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State Saturday at Elliott Field.

Dvorak, a sophomore from Tomball, Texas, was pivotal in Mines' attack, accounting for 305 of the Orediggers' 366 yards. He directed six scoring drives and was responsible for all four TDs. Much of his damage came in the third quarter when Mines outscored CSC 20-7. In that frame, he rushed for 52 yards and scored two touchdowns and added 115 yards and a 22-yard strike to wide receiver Jimmy Ellis.

Although the Eagles (1-2, 0-1 RMAC) were outscored in the third quarter, they led a majority of the first half and forced Mines (3-0, 1-0 RMAC) to punt five times. The Orediggers entered Saturday's tilt having punted just three times in two games, and CSC struck pay dirt following a three and out on the opening drive when Randy Wentz booted a 42-yard field goal.

The two teams traded possessions until the Orediggers gained good field position after a CSC fumble. Defensive lineman Dallas Fields rumbled down the sideline to the Eagles' 11-yard line and one play later Dvorak scrambled into the end zone late in the first quarter.

The Eagles didn't take long to answer. Tailback Michael Madkins began the drive with a 6-yard rush and then exploded through the line en route to a 69-yard scoring romp. On the extra point attempt, CSC's Robert Jackson barreled into the end zone and the Eagles led 11-7.

Mines responded on its next drive when Avery Llewellyn, the RMAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, kicked a 44-yard field goal. Llewellyn also added a 37-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Orediggers a 13-11 lead.

After another touchdown run by Dvorak in the third quarter put Mines up 20-11, the Eagles answered with another big play when quarterback Jonn McLain, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 209 yards, found Danny O'Boyle streaking down the south sideline for a 75-yard touchdown.

However, Mines marched right down the field and only needed four plays to move 70 yards. The drive was capped off when Dvorak hooked up with Jimmy Ellis in the flat for a 22-yard TD.

The Eagles' offense had a couple of opportunities in the fourth quarter but both drives ended in turnovers.

As a team, CSC gained 323 yards of offense but struggled on third down, converting just three of 16 chances. Madkins finished with 106 yards on the ground and Austen Stephens led the receivers with four receptions for 36 yards. O'Boyle finished with 86 yards on three catches and Madkins and Ethan Bauer also caught three balls.

Defensively, Dylan Furrier had 15 tackles, including a sack, and Isaac Holscher finished with 11.

Chadron State will play at Colorado Mesa University Saturday, Sept. 27.
