Yellow Jackets survive Eagles

CHADRON – Black Hills State's Chelsey Biegler scored 25 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 78-69 win over Chadron State College in a back and forth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game.

While Biegler did much of the scoring damage for Black Hills (9-4, 7-2 RMAC), she received plenty of help. Both Logan Cowan and Jennie Scharn scored 11 points, and Courtney Patterson added 10.

Chadron State (2-11, 2-7 RMAC) dominated the paint in the first half, outscoring Black Hills 20-12 including eight second chance points. Chadron State's Stephanie Knowles led the effort with a quick six rebounds and five points in the first half. CSC committed costly turnovers though, allowing Biegler and BHSU to take a 38-31 first half lead. In the first half, Black Hills outscored CSC 14-5 off turnovers.

Chadron State was never able to recover the lead after half as Black Hills extended its lead to as many as 15 points. The two squads nearly played an even final 20 minutes, but the Yellow Jackets outscored CSC 40-38.

For the game, the Eagles outscored the Yellow Jackets 36-28 in the paint, and 19-3 off second chance shots. Thanks to 14 points from Emma Block and 11 from Kate Simoton, the CSC bench scored 40 points.

Maka Daysh led Chadron State with 15 points, including a stretch of six-straight early in the first half. Ruby Luders, who scored six points, had a team-high seven rebounds.

Also for CSC, Allegria Chisom scored eight points and added five rebounds and two steals.

Black Hills outshot Chadron State 52 percent to 41 percent from the field, as well as knocking down 44 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles couldn't find rhythm from deep, sinking three of 18 attemps.

Chadron State takes a long trip down to New Mexico next weekend to take on New Mexico Highlands Friday Jan 16, and Western New Mexico Saturday.
