LAS VEGAS, N.M. –
Allegria Chisom scored 25 points, including 18 in the game's final 10 minutes to lift Chadron State College to an exciting overtime Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road victory over New Mexico Highlands University, 85-80,
Friday evening.
The Eagles (3-11, 3-7 RMAC) did not start out well, surrendering 24 points in the first eight minutes and trailed by as many as 16 points before the first media timeout. After the break, Chadron State went on a 28-14 run to close out the half down four.
Coming out from halftime, the Cowgirls (4-11, 4-7 RMAC), led by Giulia Simioni's 21 points, took back the lead, and owned a 12 point advantage with less than six minutes remaining in the game.
Down a dozen with five and a half minutes remaining, the Eagle's Chisom began pouring on the points. Chisom made six of the team's last nine shots, accounting for 12 points, to bring the team within two. With the score 72-70,
Maka Daysh made a strong shot in the paint to tie the game up with 20 seconds left. The Eagles made a defensive stand, but came up short on a possible game-tying shot.
The Eagles went to overtime for the first time this year, where Chisom continued her scoring, adding six more points to her total, as Chadron State outscored the Cowgirls 13-8 in overtime to seal the win.
For the game, Chisom totaled 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting and scored 18 of the Eagles' final 32 points.
She was not alone in the scoring as Block made 10 of 12 free throws for 16 points.
Stephanie Knowles scored 13 points and
Kayla Mathews shot 50 percent from the field for 13 points.
Defensively, Chadron State held the Highlands to only 33 percent shooting in the second half, as well as out-rebounded them 45-37 throughout the game.
Chisom had a team-high four steals and two blocks, while Knowles tore down 10 boards and dished out four assists.
For the Cowgirls, Simioni shot 9-14 from the field for 21 points, as well as having seven assists. Anngelina Sanchez had a team-high seven rebounds and added 15 points. Jenny Johnson had 14 points and four steals, while Kylee Reibel added 10 points.
Chadron State will play at Western New Mexico
Saturday.
