Second half surge propels Fort Lewis over CSC

CHADRON – Fort Lewis College's Alex Herrera scored 33 points and three other Skyhawks joined him in double digits en route to a 93-76 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State College Friday at the Chicoine Center.

The Skyhawks (9-3, 4-2 RMAC) trailed Chadron State 43-41 at halftime but came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Eagles, 52-33. Herrera packed the biggest punch in the game's final 20 minutes, scoring 23 points while shooting nine of 12 from the field. He also had seven of his game-high nine rebounds and five of his seven blocks.

Herrera had plenty of help in the scoring column. Rasmus Bach shot 60 percent from the field to score 17 points, Cade Kloster hit three treys and finished with 12 and Austin Haldorson scored 10 points off the bench.

The Skyhawks opened the game on fire. Their first five successful field goals were all 3-pointers and they owned an early 17-5 lead. The Eagles (3-8, 2-5 RMAC) didn't wilt, though, and continually chipped at the lead before outscoring Fort Lewis 29-19 in the final 10 minutes of the first half to earn a slim advantage.

Fort Lewis used another quick start in the second half to get some breathing room. The Skyhawks went on a 14-3 scoring run over three minutes and pushed their lead to as many as 20 points in the second half.

The Eagles received strong shooting nights from guards Christopher Smith and Evan Brooks. Smith scored a career-high 26 points and Brooks added 22 and six boards. Both players made eight field goals and Smith connected on six of seven 3-pointers.

Also for CSC, Davante McCallam scored 10 points and had seven rebounds and Sharif Black chipped in seven.

For the game, Fort Lewis shot 61.4 percent from the field (35-57) and Chadron State hit 46 percent (27-59).

Chadron State will host Adams State Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
