CHADRON — Spurred by a large and noisy crowd, the Chadron State College wrestlers dominated Colorado State-Pueblo 26-10 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual Friday night.
Â
The Eagles won seven of the 10 matches and earned bonus points in four of them.
Â
One of the highlights belonged to CSC redshirt freshman
Zack Denney, a 149-pounder who posted a 20-2 technical fall in what officially was his first collegiate match. Denney's opponent, Jose Chavez, scored first with a takedown, but Denney rang up the next 20 points in just two periods.
Â
Denney has been plagued with hard luck the past year and a half. He won 166 matches during his career at North Platte High School, including 49 as a senior in 2012 when he was the Class A 145-pound champion at the Nebraska State Tournament.
Denney redshirted his first year at CSC, then missed the entire 2013-14 schedule because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. He damaged the same knee again while working out last summer, forcing him to sit out the first three months of this season.
Â
Just recently, Denney was cleared to resume full-scale action and he definitely had an impressive debut.
Â
The Eagles, now 7-6 in duals this season, received major decisions from
Taylor Summers at 133 pounds,
Jacob Anderson at 149 and
Devan Fors at 184.Â
Â
Another CSC entry,
Caleb Copeland, won the 174-pound match 13-6, just one point shy of a major decision.
Â
The other winners for CSC were
Devan Fors, who dominated the 197-pound match 7-1 while accumulating 3 minutes and 25 seconds of riding time, and freshman
Chance Helmick, who took a 14-10 decision at 165 pounds for his sixth consecutive victory, the longest on the team.
Â
The wins were the 20
th of the season for both Summers and Anderson and the 18
th for Copeland.
Â
Pueblo got its victories from Alex Baca, a 4-3 winner at 125 pounds; Steven Kelley, who took a major decision at 157; and heavyweight Niko Bogojevic, who used a takedown in overtime to edge
Jake Weber 5-3.
Â
Bogojevic leads the ThunderWolves, now 6-6 in duals this season, with a 21-9 record.
Â
The Eagles will be at home again on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Western State.
