GOLDEN, Colo. – Chadron State College junior
Mel Herl of Eaton, Colo., was a double winner at the Colorado Mines Twilight Indoor Track and Field Meet in Golden over the weekend.
Herl won the 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 58 feet, 1 inch on Friday and the shot put Saturday at 44-7. The latter mark is just an inch shy of her career best.
Another CSC thrower, sophomore
Keri Ruff, was third in both of the events. She heaved the weight 48-6 ¾ and shoved the shot 39-5. A sophomore, Ruff and Herl were teammates at Eaton High School.
The Chadron State women added another first when sophomore Stachia Reuswaat of Rapid City went 19-9 ¾ in the long jump. Reuswaat also was fourth in the 60 meter dash.
Another Rapid City athlete,
Tessa Gorsuch, placed third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.77 seconds. Teammate
Shelby Bozner of Rock Springs, Wyo., was fourth with a career-best 8.86. Bozner also was fifth in the long jump at 17-9.
Kelsy Wood of Hemingford was sixth in the long jump at 17-6 ½.
Sophomore
Angelique Urenda of Pueblo, Colo., was second in the high jump at 5-1.
Three Chadron State men won events. Freshman Demarcus Simpson of Lafayette, Ga., won the 60-meter days in 6.90 seconds,
Chris Cutcher of Colorado Springs took the 60-meter high hurdles in 8.21 seconds and
Kyle McCarthy of Aurora, Neb., won the shot put at 52-0 feet.
McCarthy also was third in the weight throw and Cutcher was third in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.
Isaiah Castellew of Scottsbluff finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22-7.
Matt Klein of Scottsbluff was fourth in the 60 hurdles in 8.78 seconds.
The Eagles'
Tanner Rien of Mitchell was second in the shot put at 49-2 ¼ and also was sixth in the weight throw.
Senior
Skyler Hoopes of Lusk, Wyo., was the runner-up in the pole vault by clearing 14-7 ½.
The Eagles will host their Twilight Meet this coming Friday, Jan. 30.
