Chadron State women turn back Metro State

CHADRON – Kate Simonton scored 22 points and Maka Daysh added 19 to help lead the Eagles to an impressive 79-71 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over visiting Metro State University Denver Friday at the Chicoine Center.

Chadron State will host Regis Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

It was the first win for the Eagles, now 5-13 overall and 5-9 in the conference, over Metro State since February 2004.

For a period during Friday's game, it looked like Metro State's string of victories over Chadron State would continue. The Roadrunners (11-7, 8-6 RMAC) closed the first half with back-to-back 3-pointers and pushed their lead to 46-36 with 17 minutes to play. However, the Eagles didn't wilt and went on a 19-5 scoring run over the next five minutes.

During that stretch, Kate Simonton hit two 3-pointers and a layup, Ruby Luders added four free throws, Stephanie Knowles chipped in with a trey and Maka Daysh scored from the field and the foul line.

The Eagles, who shot 59 percent from the field in the second half compared to 33 percent for Metro State, pushed their lead to 59-52 following a layup from Allegria Chisom and despite Metro State's best efforts, CSC owned the lead the remainder of the game.

Simonton hit seven of 13 from the field, including four treys, to lead all scorers with 22 points. Daysh also sank seven shots to finish with 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Also for CSC, Chisom scored nine points, Emma Block had eight points and six assists and Luders added seven points and six boards.

Metro State had two players finish in double figures, led by Deni Jacobs' 22 points.
