CSC women use big second half to topple Regis

CHADRON — For the second night in row, the Chadron State women's basketball team rallied from a sizable halftime deficit to defeat a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team from Denver.

Regis led 44-32 at intermission Saturday night, but the Eagles, winners of three straight games over league rivals with winning records, outscored the Rangers 44-25 in the second half to win 76-69.

On Friday night, Metro State led 40-34 at halftime, but the Eagles won 79-71.

Regis was red-hot in the first half, shooting 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field while CSC shot 43 percent (12-28).  In the second half, the Eagles warmed up to hit 52 percent (14-27) and Regis cooled down, making just 22.2 percent (6-27).

The game went down to the wire. Chadron State led by only 70-69 with four minutes to play after the Rangers' Caresse Williams scored on a layup. But Regis never scored again, missing seven field goal shots and a pair of free throws.

Meanwhile, two CSC freshmen, Maka Daysh and Kayla Mathews, each canned a pair of free throws and the team's only senior, Kate Simonton, drove for a layup with 19 seconds left to seal the verdict.

The five starters scored all but three of the Eagles' points. Simonton and Allegria Chisom each tallied 17, Mathews 16, Daysh 15 and Stephanie Knowles eight. Daysh came away with a game-high nine rebounds and Chisolm grabbed seven.

Williams led Regis with 19 points, including 11 of 14 from the free throw line, and Bay'lee Purdy added 15, but the pair combined for just 12 points in the second half.

The Eagles are now 6-13 overall and 6-9 in the RMAC. Regis is 12-7 and 8-7.
