CSC men fend off Regis

CHADRON – All five Chadron State College scores tallied at least nine points and the men's basketball team survived a buzzer beater en route to their 73-72 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Regis Saturday at the Chicoine Center.

Evan Brooks led the Eagles (5-14, 4-11 RMAC) with 18 points, Josiah Lee scored 11, Davante McCallam chipped in with 10 and both Kendrick Holliman and Christopher Smith finished with nine to end CSC's recent two-game losing skid.

Despite the balanced scoring, Chadron State still had to withstand a buzzer beater. The Eagles led 71-70 with eight seconds to play, and extended that advantage when Brooks canned two free throws. However, Regis advanced the ball into the frontcourt and managed to get off a long, contested shot from Spenser Reeb as the buzzer sounded. Unfortunately, for the Rangers both of Reeb's feet were inside the 3-point arc and the Eagles escaped with the victory.

The game was close throughout, featuring nine ties and eight lead changes. Regis never led by more than four points while the Eagles ended the first half with a double-digit advantage, 42-32.

Chadron State shot well in the opening half – the Eagles hit 52 percent of their shots – but cooled down in the second half by netting 36 percent of its attempts. Regis, meanwhile, shot 50 percent for the game. The Eagles made up the difference, though, by shooting well at the foul line, hitting 22 of 26 attempts. Regis (5-14, 3-12 RMAC) made 16 of 22.

CSC's starters poured in 57 of its 72 points but nine players found the scoring column.

Brett Hartshorne led Regis with 23 points and five rebounds. Dexter Sienko added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds but no other Ranger scored more than eight points.

Prior to the game, Chadron State honored longtime Regis head coach Lonnie Porter, who is retiring following this season.
