Western New Mexico tops Eagles

SILVER CITY, N.M — October 23, 2015 — Western New Mexico University had 40 kills and just six hitter errors Friday night while sweeping Chadron State College in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball match here. The sets went 25-22, 25-15, and 25-19 in favor of WNMU.

Despite the Mustangs' efficient hitting, the Eagles remained in close contention during a big portion of each set. Western led the first contest by just 16-15, the second by only 13-11 and the third 12-10 before building larger margins.

The Mustangs' .374 hitting percentage is their season-best. They are now 15-5 overall and 10-2 in the RMAC to share the conference's best record with Metro State and Colorado Mines.

The Eagles had 35 kills and 26 hitting miscues for a .093 hitting figure. They are 5-15 for the season and 4-8 in the conference.

The Mustangs' hitting was balanced. Both Kelli McGhiey and Shannon Rich had eight kills and only one hitting infraction. Three teammates chipped in with seven kills apiece.

Both Rudy Leasau and Gabby Varela had 10 kills for Chadron State, but none of the other Eagles had more than four.

WNMU had eight total blocks and Chadron State three. The Eagles' Sierra Winkle had a match-high 11 digs.

The Eagles will play New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, at 5 p.m. Saturday.
