Eagles sweep past Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - October 24, 2015 - Senior Lela Nomura had a double-double Saturday evening as the Chadron State College volleyball swept past New Mexico Highlands University by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 in Las Vegas.

Nomura had a match-high 11 kills and came up with 14 digs to share match honors with Eagles' freshman Sierra Winkle.

Also standing out for Chadron State was freshman middle hitter Kenzie Chrisman, who chipped in nine kills and was credited with seven blocks. CSC's 12 to six blocking advantage over the Cowgirls was one of the deciding factors.

Another freshman, Madison Webb, handed out 34 set assists and had three ace serves for the Eagles, now 6-15 for the season and 5-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

In the first set, CSC trailed briefly before a kill by Rudy Leasau gave them a 10-9 advantage. They held onto the lead the rest of the set to finish ahead 25-22.

In the second, the Eagles saw their biggest deficit of the night, down 14-7, before cranking out a 15-3 run. Three of their seven service aces came during this stretch.

Chadron State took advantage of another momentum shift in the third frame, down 8-6. They took advantage of a 14-3 run at that point, getting to 20-11 and cruising to victory. Webb had 10 of her 34 total assists during that pivotal run.

The Eagles will be on the road this coming weekend to play two of the conference's top teams, University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Metro State University Denver. The Eagles are now two matches out of playoff contention, trailing both Western State and Adams State to make the postseason. Five matches remain on the schedule.
