Offensive display nets huge win

CHADRON, Neb. - October 30, 2015 - Hitters Rudy Leasau and Sina Mauga put on an offensive clinic tonight, with setter Madison Webb racking up 49 assists in four sets, as Chadron State dealt the University of Colorado Colorado Springs a 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-15) loss tonight at Gallogly Events Center in Colorado Springs.

Leasau finished tonight's match with elite numbers on the stat sheet. The junior outside hitter posted 21 kills on 38 tries with only five misses for an outstanding hitting percentage of .421. She added eight digs and assisted on one block to total 21.5 points.

Mauga hit at a team-high clip of .429 and chipped in 12 kills, along with three total blocks, to finish with 14.0 points for the night.

CSC had yet another top hitting performance as a team, hitting at a clip of .237 for their best mark of the conference season.

"Sina and Rudy played really well in the middle for us tonight," said coaching assistant Whitney Roth after the win. "We worked all week on our hitting percentage and where to place the ball. Those two came up with some really big plays for us tonight."

The Eagles held top RMAC hitter Kim Catlett to a mere 12 kills tonight, and they forced her into 11 errors to set up one of her toughest matches all season.

"Defensively, we really came together and played as one unit tonight," said Roth. This might have been our best all-around performance, but we're not looking ahead. We have a match tomorrow that could be even tougher."

CSC was up as much as 16-7 in set one, before cruising to a 25-19 finish. They only trailed briefly in the opening moments.

Set two was more of the same, with the Eagles playing frontrunner all the way after grabbing an early 3-2 lead.

Chadron State hung with the Mountain Lions throughout the third set, but UCCS prevailed in a hard-fought battle, forcing the Eagles into several hitting errors and winning 25-22.

Finally the Eagles put the match away in emphatic style, winning the fourth set 25-15. CSC actually trailed 5-2 in the opening volleys, but a pair of service aces by Alexis Farris put them out to an 8-5 lead, and the Eagles never trailed again. Leasau had six of her 21 kills in the final frame.

With the victory, Chadron State has six conference wins for the first time since earning eight in 2007.

Chadron State faces MSU Denver tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. The Roadrunners are now tied with Colorado Mesa for second place in the RMAC, with both home and away sweeps of first-place and nationally ranked Colorado Mines on their resume.

The Eagles gained ground in the RMAC standings this evening, with Adams State falling in straight sets on the road to Colorado State University-Pueblo. They now sit one match behind both Adams State and Colorado Christian for the eighth and final playoff spot. CSC owns a head-to-head tiebreaker with Colorado Christian, but loses such a tiebreaker to Adams State. ASU plays at seventh-place Western State tomorrow night, meaning one of the two playoff contenders will suffer a loss, keeping the Eagles within striking distance with four matches remaining.
