BHSU outlasts Eagles in five

SPEARFISH, S.D. - October 9, 2015 - Black Hills State University's twice erased a one-set deficit to come back and defeat the Chadron State Eagles in five sets, Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. With the 3-2 win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-10 (3-5 RMAC) while the Eagles fall to 4-11 (3-4 RMAC).

Chadron State outside hitter Rudy Leasau paced the Eagles with 19 kills. Gaby Varela added 11 kills. Leasau (19.5) and Varela (14.0) were the only Eagles in double-digit points.

CSC had four athletes with double-digit digs on defense, led by Sierra Winkle with 26. Madison Webb had 18 on the night while Leasau and Varela added 15 and 11, respectively.

Defensively, the typically net-minding Eagles struggled with only seven total shots blocked as a team.

The Eagles went ahead twice in the match, controlling the lead most of the way through the first and third sets, but the second and fourth sets went to the Yellow Jackets, tying the match both times. BHSU had 13 total team blocks, holding CSC to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the year (.080). As a team, Black Hills State hit a modest 149.

Chadron State will play at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Saturday at 3 p.m.
