CHADRON, Neb. -- November 7, 2015 -- Chadron State volleyball (9-16, 8-9 RMAC) put together a historic win tonight at Chicoine Center, knocking off Black Hills State University (4-13, 7-18 RMAC) in straight sets of 25-23, 25-11, and 25-19 to stay in the hunt for a spot in the RMAC Tournament. The Eagles are now locked in a four-way tie for the eighth and final playoff spot, with one match remaining.
It was the first win by CSC in the last eight tries against BHSU. It also marks the first eight-win conference season for the Eagles since 2007, when they played one additional conference match. The last time the program won more RMAC contests was 2003, when the squad won nine games out of 19 and last made the conference postseason.
Madison Webb had 14.67 assists per set tonight, putting up her second-best number of the year. She propelled the Eagles to another stout hitting percentage of .312. No other setter in the RMAC had a better assists per set average over a pair of wins this weekend. To those outstanding numbers she added 3 service aces and five digs.
Rudy Leasau led the Eagles in kills and total points, with 13 and 15.5, respectively.
Gaby Varela tallied 11 kills to only one error, for another standout hitting percentage of .667.
Alia Brennan contributed five kills for the third straight match, easing back into the rotation after an injury earlier in the season
Sierra Winkle collected 15 digs to lead Chadron State, followed by
Jamie McLain with 10.
Sina Mauga led her second straight match in total blocks with 3.0. She accumulated 10.0 total blocks over the weekend, to finish with a bountiful 1.67 per match. No other player in the conference had a better average and finished the weekend with a pair of wins.
The Eagles started, as they did last night, falling behind on a series of attacking errors. The Yellow Jackets went up 8-1 to start the set, but CSC inched their way back into contention over the course of 38 points, finally catching up on a service ace by
Sierra Winkle to make it 19-19. Chadron State took their first lead at 22-21, and two consecutive kills by Varela sealed the deal.
Mauga andÂ
Tatyana Tuialii-Umi came up big in the second set, each putting down four kills apiece - nearly half their combined contribution for the night. Chadron State led from start to finish, breezing to a 25-11 final score.
The third set was also very briefly contested by the Yellow Jackets, as CSC cruised to victory, leading most of the way.
Chadron State moves up into a four-way tie with Colorado Christian, CSU-Pueblo, and Adams State at 8-9 in conference. All four teams have one conference match remaining, and then any teams still tied at 9-9 would be compared on head-to-head match record, then head-to-head game record, among other factors, to determine a tournament qualifier. The teams will be evaluated on their records after Saturday's matches. CSC hosts Regis University at 7 p.m.Â
