NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The first regional coaches' rankings of the regular season were released today, by D2Wrestle.com.
Six Chadron State wrestlers were pegged among the top six in their weight class, in the opinion of coaches in Super Region Four, which includes the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, half of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, and Simon Fraser University.
Sophomore
Terrance McKinney, at 149 pounds, was slotted the highest among the CSC grapplers, debuting in the first-place spot. On his record is a fall over No. 4 Tyler Adams of Western State, and an 11-5 decision over No. 3 Jacob Gerken of Colorado Mines. He also pinned 2015 NCAA Division I regional placewinner Matthew Ontiveros of Utah Valley, in 1:23. McKinney is 8-2 on the season, with six of his 10 matches coming against Division I opponents.
At 174 pounds,
Caleb Copeland lands at No. 2 in the region with an overall record of 7-5, 5-1 in Division II. Three of his five losses are to Division I opponents, and one was a double-overtime decision against the region's top wrestler, Austin Harris of Western State. He lost a 3-0 decision to the No. 1-ranked NAIA wrestler, Tyler McMichael of Midland, and defeated No. 2 Kevin Corbett of Doane, in a 6-3 decision.
In the 133-pound class,
Taylor Summers is ranked third. He sports a 7-2 overall record, and three of his victories are against Division I opponents. His only Division II loss is to two-time defending national champion Daniel DeShazer, the region's No. 1-ranked wrestler out of Nebraska-Kearney, by a 3-1 decision. Summers received a victory by forfeit against DeShazer in the Cowboy Open.
Ranked fourth at 165 pounds is
Chance Helmick, whose 11-4 overall record reflects 15 matches in only two days. In that span he defeated three different opponents from the Air Force Academy, and on Nov. 21 avenged two previous losses to the region's third-ranked opponent, Kennan Willits of Colorado Mines, defeating him 7-5.
Shane Rodenburg (184) checks in at No. 5 in the region, after winning eight straight matches to kick off his true freshman season. His first four victories earned him the Amateur bracket title at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Open, where he pinned three of his four opponents including one from the host Cowboys. He then battled into the semifinals of the UNK Holiday Open before settling for a sixth-place finish.
Finally, a sixth-place regional ranking goes to junior
Jacob Anderson (157), who went 21-10 overall last season at 149 pounds, twice defeating the current No. 2 at that weight, Tyler Mies of Newman. Anderson has seen limited action due to injury, but hopes to return to the mat soon.
Colorado Mesa had two first-place individual rankings out of 10, to lead all region teams. Eight other squads each had one top wrestler.Â
The top six teams in the region were ranked as follows: 1. Nebraska-Kearney; 2. Central Oklahoma; 3. California Baptist; 4. CSU-Pueblo; 5. Colorado Mesa; 6. Colorado Mines
