DENVER — December 18, 2015 — The Chadron State women's basketball team trailed Metro State by 15 points early in the second half, rallied to take the lead twice in the final two minutes, but dropped a 61-59 decision to the Roadrunners Friday night in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash in Denver.
Both teams were sparked by 6-foot sophomores from faraway places.
The Eagles'
Maka Daysh, a native of New Zealand, scored 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, both career highs. For Metro State, Georgia Ohrdorf, who is from Australia, scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds.
Ohrdorf's first 3-pointer of the season after nine misses put the Roadrunners ahead for keeps 60-59 with 40 seconds to play. Twenty seconds later, the Eagles missed a pair of free throws and Metro made one of two shots from the line with 4.5 seconds left to wrap up the scoring.
Both teams made right at 38 percent of their field goal tries, but Metro got nine more shots and outscored CSC 52-46 from the field. Each team sank four 3-pointers.
The Eagles could have helped themselves more from the free throw line, where they hit just 13 of 24 attempts. Metro was nine for 13 at the line.
Daysh was nine of 16 from the field and nine of 12 from the charity stripe. Guard
Emma Block, who put Chadron State ahead 57-56 by burying a trey with two minutes remaining and then made two of three free throws to put the Eagles on top 59-57 with 1:02 left, finished with eight points.
Besides the 18 points by Ohrdorf, Metro got 14 from Hannah Stipanovich and 12 from J'Nae Squires-Horton.
Metro is now 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC. The Eagles are 1-7 and 1-3. Both Chadron State teams will play at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday night.
