Eagles to open RMAC slate by hosting Regis Rangers

CHADRON, Neb. -- Both Chadron State College basketball teams will be opening their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedules Saturday night by hosting the Regis Rangers.  The double-header in the Chicoine Center will start at 5:30 with the women's game.

The Regis teams have new coaches this season.  They are Molly Marrin for the women and Brady Bergeson for the men.  Both replaced long-time fixtures in the positions.

Linda Raunig had coached the Regis women the past 25 years and Lonnie Porter was the men's coach for 38 years, the second longest tenure in NCAA Division II history.

Marrin earned all-conference honors while playing for the Raunig and the Rangers.  Prior to taking over the program, she was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco and Denver University.

Bergeson was a point guard at Chapman College at Orange, California, during his playing days. He was once an assistant coach at Metro State in Denver, and he had a 69-45 record as the head coach at Western Oregon the past four seasons.

Both Regis teams will come to Chadron with 2-4 records.

The Lady Rangers have defeated Oklahoma Christian and Western Oregon while losing to three Kansas teams—Newman, Pittsburgh State and Fort Hays State—and another Denver team, Johnson and Wales.

The Regis men have beaten Johnson and Wales and Colorado College while falling to Lubbock Christian, St. Mary's of Texas, Pittsburg State and Southwest Minnesota.

The Regis women feature a highly-regarded backcourt duo in seniors Bay'lee Purdy and Caresse Williams.  Purdy earned first-team all-RMAC honors last season when she averaged 15.8 points and Williams was a second-team choice while averaging 14 points.

Purdy is averaging about the same this year while Williams is scoring at a 10.5-point clip.

Four starters are back from last year's Regis men's team. Sophomore Dexter Sienko leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points a game and rebounding at 6.7.  Freshman Jarrett Brobeck is averaging 14 points and has sunk 18 of 39 3-pointers.

The Chadron State women are 0-4 and the men are 2-2 entering the conference schedules.

The Lady Eagles are trying to improve their ball handling after averaging 25 turnovers a game. Center Maka Daysh has scored 45 points in the last two games to lead the team in scoring at 15.8 a game.   Guard Emma Block is averaging 10.5 points.

CSC coach Tim Connealy said his team has played four strong opponents and have encountered a variety of styles and defenses.

"We're looking forward to the conference games," Connealy said.  "We're all 0-0 again and I'm encouraged by how well we've played at times."

The CSC men have a double-figure scorer in guard Warren Gordon, who is averaging 13.5 points, and six more players who are averaging at least six points a game.

"I like our team," coach Brent Bargen said.  "We've defended well, have a lot of depth and know we're going to get better the more we play together."

Four letterwinners and six transfers made up the Eagles' 10-man rotation during the non-conference games.
