Chadron State women rally past Regis, 66-64

CHADRON, Neb. — December 5, 2015 — The Chadron State College women's basketball team rallied for a thrilling 66-64 victory over Regis in the opening game in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference of the season for both teams.

After going ahead 9-8 early in the first quarter, Regis led 38-30 at halftime and remained ahead all the way until the Eagles tied the score at 51-51 on a 3-pointer by Emma Block with 7:42 to play. 

The Rangers knotted the score at 56-56 on Bay'lee Purdy's trey with 5:16 remaining, but Chadron State took the lead for keeps on Maka Daysh's layup with 5 minutes to play and scored the next seven points to build a 65-56 lead with 1:13 to play.

Shelby Espinosa finally broke the Rangers' dry spell by hitting a jump shot with 49 seconds to play. Another Regis guard, Caresse Williams, made three of four free throws and Majestie Robinson hit an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the Eagles had their first win of the season after going 0-4 in non-conference games.

Both Block and Stephanie Knowles scored 15 points for the Eagles while Daysh chipped in 11 and Allegria Chisom 10.

Knowles also grabbed eight rebounds, had four assists and blocked three shots. 

Regis also had four players score in double figures, led by Morgan Ducklow with 11 points and Williams, Espinosa and Kaylie Rader all had 10.

The Eagles shot 51.1 percent (24-47) from the field, while Regis shot just 34.4 percent (21-61), but the Rangers took 14 more shots from the field and also went 17 of 20 from the free throw line while the Eagles were 15 of 24.

Regis is now 2-5 (0-1 RMAC) for the season. Chadron State improves to 1-4 (1-0 RMAC).
